Green Whale
Promote and contribute to the protection and enhancement of the Porto Ferro marine-coastal system.
Green Whale is a 12-month project funded by the Waldensian Church's Otto per Mille (Eight per Thousand) and taking place in Porto Ferro Bay, in the Municipality of Sassari.
Porto Ferro beach is a SCI (Site of Community Interest) area that, thanks to its privileged location, has received several awards, including the title of sustainable beach from the Foundation for Environmental Education. However, the amount of plastic accumulating there is extremely high, even in the winter season. The latest reports published by Legambiente (Spiagge and Goletta Verde) identify the island's west coast as the most critical: the mistral wind generates a large amount of energy, which, combined with the area's unique oceanographic characteristics, leads to a high accumulation of plastic and solid waste, which represents a major threat to coastal systems.
The project aims to promote sport and the active role of those who frequent the bay in protecting and enhancing the coastal marine ecosystem.

The activities:
At least 12 awareness days will be organized, featuring various practical and theoretical activities: beach cleanups, excursions to discover the marine-coastal and lagoon systems, and the history of the bay; introduction to surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, Pilates, and yoga; treasure hunts; seminars on the impact of plastic on marine ecosystems; and creative recycling workshops using materials collected on the beach. A GreenWhale – the plastic-eating whale, a fully sustainable and removable structure created by artist Vincenzo Ganadu – will be built and installed in the area.
The whale will serve as a plastic collector. A communication and information campaign will be promoted and disseminated on the school's and local stakeholders' main social media channels, including interviews, stories, best practices, and video and photographic documentation. Coordination and networking among institutional and non-institutional stakeholders operating in the area will be promoted. The project will be presented to local authorities, and meetings will be organized with local government representatives.
